    I am a beginner and would like to know if one product is better than another as far as shampoos and soaps. Is this something I need to worry about or can I use the ones I have?

    You can't use the good stuff, I used to make my own soap and lotions. All those fats, oils, butters are gone (at least for now). Watch your labels on everything. Mineral Oil (Baby oil) is one of the few things that can be used.
