Milk is so problematic for so many people. They just think their symptoms are a normal part of life. It's also high in sugar. Although if you can do milk, it should definitely be raw.
Peter you might be fine with heavy cream and butter. I'm casein intolerant, but enjoy occasional cheese, cream and butter. For the most part though, i clarify all my butter to make a milk-free ghee, which is lovely.
I also use coconut milk liberally. Look for books by Bruce Fife -- he's the main coconut milk author, and Rachel Masetz. She is the author of Garden of Eating, which is a great book for P3, and she has a new dessert book out that is dairy and mostly sugar free. Can't wait to try some of her ice cream recipes.
I am also going to try my hand at the mug cake that is dairy free, egg free and made in the oven. We have no microwave!
Deb, I go on P3 Thanksgiving day. You know i will be having chocolate that day!
I'm going to use coconut milk and ghee instead of milk and butter. I'm also going to soak 1 tb of chia seeds in 1/4 cup of water for each egg called for. Will just have to wing it with the oven.
A friend of mine just made a great dairy-free, egg-free chocolate pudding for her highly allergic daughter. Somewhere around here i have her recipe that i can post. All you would need to do is substitute stevia for the sweetener.
I'm lucky that my social circle is primarily people who eat a high-fat, low-carb diet, so i'm surrounded by good recipe ideas.
My naturopath's office also recommended cream instead of milk on P3 due to sugar content. But I'm very sensitive to sugar all the time, so the advice may have been more about ME than the protocol.
I am day 7 P3. I wanted to bump this one because milk has become the culprit in my weight gain. I have been eating crazy fat and protein and next to no gains. HOWEVER, the days I have milk (2%) I have gained. One pound one day and 1 1/2 the next time. I am now 1.5 over LDW and am starting a protein day. Thank goodness I caught myself before adding milk to a protein shake (powder is whey only and no carbs). I added cream and water instead,
Just wanted to bring it up again. I couldn't figure out what was going on at first. We'll see in the future!
I drink milk every P3. I also eat cheese, yogurt (home made) and have never had a problem with gains. Just a reminder that everyone is different. I saw on another post where someone said not to have wheat in P4 untiil the end or something like that.
Everyone is different so I completely recommend trying in moderation one item at a time that is allow on P3 per day. No reaction, you can try something new on the next day. Same with P4. Often times it isn't the food but rather the amount that we inttroduce into our bodies :)
Some people are more carb sensitive than others and milk is very high in sugar, albeit natural sugar. Unsweetened almond milk and SoDelicious coconut milk (the stuff in cartons in the dairy, not the sweet canned stuff) are very low in carbs and a good substitute.
Yogurt is fermented and some of the sugar is eaten up in the process, so the plain Greek-type stuff has practically the same nutritional makeup as cottage cheese.
I also drank milk, ate yogurt in P3 with no problems. If you aren't able to drink milk in a couple weeks without issues, I would suspect a sensitivity.
Milk IS okay unless you have a sensitivity to it. Even Pounds and Inches says to add milk during a break which is the only real peek we have into P3.
If an interruption of treatment lasting more than four days is necessary, the patient must increase his diet to at least 800 calories by adding meat, eggs, cheese, and milk to his diet after the third day, as otherwise he will find himself so hungry and weak that he is unable to go about his usual occupation.
