The problem is most people do not die in a way that makes their organs accecptable for transplant. Even auto accident victims have a short window of eligibility.

I think Annette has brought it to our attention that we all need to let your families know that if we are ok with donating our organs in the event of death. Honestly, it was not even on my radar.

Socal, that is sad. I have a friend whose daughter is receiving regular blood transfusions while in chemo for leukemia. It pains me to think she is getting a drug addict's blood.

Ok I have never ever heard that you can't donate if you are gay! I have numerous friends that are gay & they are organ donors!!

You can also have a Advance Directive in place explaining EXACTLY what you want done upon your death!

People just don't realize the seriousness of organ donation or the importance of it - until you are put in the position of you or a loved one needing one. If through all this I get 1 person to sign up as a donor then I am doing something right in promoting it! Below is a short list of facts for whole lot info go to www.donatelife.net & trust me people on these waiting list are desparate!! Your entire world is turned upside down during this entire process. Your health, your family, your finances (that is why I am soooo grateful for all of you that donated on my FB page it made a huge difference I was stressing out how I was going to afford gas, bridge toll, food... this helped me out for a few days & gave me a little bit of a reprieve for a short while though back stressing now) my goal after we are done with this transplant is to establish a foundation to help others going through what we went through. Through donations I want to be able to provide a small trust to help out with everyday expenses. Anyway here is a few facts that I copied from donatelife.net's website:

    Learn the facts
Despite continuing efforts at public education, misconceptions and inaccuracies about donation persist. Learn these facts to help you better understand organ, eye and tissue donation:

Fact: Anyone can be a potential donor regardless of age, race, or medical history.

Fact: All major religions in the United States support organ, eye and tissue donation and see it as the final act of love and generosity toward others.

Fact: If you are sick or injured and admitted to the hospital, the number one priority is to save your life. Organ, eye and tissue donation can only be considered after you are deceased.

Fact: When you are on the waiting list for an organ, what really counts is the severity of your illness, time spent waiting, blood type, and other important medical information, not your financial status or celebrity status.

Fact: An open casket funeral is possible for organ, eye and tissue donors. Through the entire donation process the body is treated with care, respect and dignity.

Fact: There is no cost to the donor or their family for organ or tissue donation.

Fact: Signing a donor card and a driver's license with an "organ donor" designation may not satisfy your state's requirements to become a donor. Be certain to take the necessary steps to be a donor and ensure that your family understands your wishes.

www.unos.org - this can tell you exactly how many people are waiting for various transplants!!! I am always on this site!

If your friends are donors, they didn't answer the questionnaire honestly. Same for blood donations - no one who has been sexually active with a member of the same sex since 1984 can donate blood, or be an organ donor. It's a topic near and dear to my friend's heart, because he used to donate blood regularly, and they won't let him any more, unless he lies on the form. And he refuses to do that.

    Annette,
The pieces just continue to fall into place. I know you hate the way the cure is delivered. However.....if the organs were not harvested...they would go in the ground. It is good that a person can go on living in this way. You and Elmer are providing a chance for that person to live on when in another scenario they would not have. A death for naught. All we have been given is not really ours anyway.....material goods, intellect, and these lovely machines which are our bodies. I tell you this....if my family member can live on by helping another, what a glorious thought in knowing there is loving purpose even in death. I don't know if you will want to contact the donor family, or have them contact you, but it could be very healing for everyone. There is sadness in anyone's death. But it is a fact of life. This process provides life from the death. It is good.

SMin, Do you know whether the rules for organ donation and giving blood are the same in all states or if they differ from state to state? I cannot believe that such ignorant laws even exist!!! There is no doubt in my mind that should I or a loved one be in a position to need a donated organ or blood I would choose your friend in a heartbeat over your sister! Such small-minded ignorance is pervasive today. This just infuriates me!!!!

It's set by the CDC, so it's nationwide. He got arrested last year as part of a very rowdy protest at a blood donation clinic. I can't always say I agree with his methods, but I have to admire his passion and commitment. I'd lose my job (and my security clearance) if I got arrested protesting anything.

Not that I didn't believe you SMinSoCal but I looked it up and cannot believe that homosexual men cannot donate blood, however it only specifies males. It was also interesting that IV drug users and anyone that has been paid for sex cannot donate.
